Poprad Municipal Government
Because of its location under the High Tatras and its close proximity to four national parks, Poprad is of great interest to tourists and admirers of natural beauty. With its 54,000 inhabitants it is the largest town in the Špis region and the tenth largest city in Slovakia. Poprad is a popular place for cultural and social life, as well as a well-known place for relaxation in the Podtatranský region. The city abounds in sacred and historical monuments, the most valuable of which may be found in the city district of Spišská Sobota. This district, with its medieval square surrounded by Renaissance burgher houses, incorporates the St George Church with its works by Master Paul of Levoča, one of the unique historical gems of Spiš.
Through progressive development the city has steadily changed its look and has become a popular place for both domestic and foreign tourists. The widespread network of shops and services, leisure centres and accommodation facilities of different categories, and the rich cultural, social and sporting life of the city, create favourable conditions for the development of hiking and tourism.
