Leopoldov is situated in the Trnava Region of western Slovakia, near the Váh River. Known for its 17th-century fortress, which served after 1855 as a state prison, it is now also an important railway junction.
It covers an area of 5,652 square kilometres and has a population of 4,083 (2005).
