Lipany is situated on the bank of the Torysa River in the Sabinov district, Prešov region in the north-eastern part of Slovakia. It is located 12 kilometres from Sabinov, 29 kilometres from Prešov and 35 kilometres from Stará Ľubovňa. It lies at an altitude of 389 metres above sea level. The town represents a cultural and administrative centre of the Hornotoryšský (Upper Torysa) region.
It covers an area of 12.648 square kilometres and has a total population of 6,420 (2009).
