Situated in Prievidza District, Trenčín Region, 15 kilometres from Prievidza and 20 kilometres from Žiar nad Hronom, Handlová is surrounded by the Vtácnik mountain range in the west and the Žiar mountain range in the south, east and north.
It covers an area of 50.75 square kilometres and has a total population of 17,698 (2005).
