Rajec is situated in the Rajčanka River valley of Žilina Region in north west Slovakia, between the Strážovské vrchy and Malá Fatra mountains and around 20 kilometres south-south-west of Žilina. It lies at an altitude of 452 metres above sea level
Rajec covers an area of 31.459 square kilometres and has a population of 6,078 (2005).
