Kremnica is located at an altitude of 564 metres above sea level in the Kremnica Mountains of central Slovakia, around 20 kilometres west of Banská Bystrica. Its well-preserved medieval town, built above important gold mines, is the site of the oldest operational mint in the world.
Kremnica covers an area of 43.136 square kilometres and has a total population of 5,597 (2006).
