Slovak Technical Museum, Košice
Slovak Technical Museum (STM) offers an insight into the history and traditions of science and technology. Being the main centre of museum documentation of science development as well as of manufacturing and technology it administers ample collections, initiates care-taking of selected technical monuments in situ in the whole territory of Slovakia, provides technical assistance for their preservation and renovation. It also surveys the contribution of Slovakia and its personalities to development of world science and technology. The extensive collection presents branches as mining, metallurgy, artistic blacksmith, watch making, engineering, electrical engineering, geodesy and cartography, photographic and cinematographic equipment. Scientific disciplines are represented by the collections of historical instrumentation used in physics, chemistry and astronomy. A large number of original exhibits is presented in exposures and in series of collections.
STM administers also some immovable technical monuments, for example the Salter in Prešov, the blast furnace Karol (“Charles”) at Vlachy, the typical forge called “Hamor” in Medzev and a smithy in Moldava nad Bodvou. The Slovak technical museum exhibits its integrated collection of historical clocks and watches in the mansion of Budimír. In 1992 an autonomous detached department of the Slovak Technical Museum have been opened in Bratislava, which focuses on museum documentation and on presentation of road and railway transport in Slovakia in the form of exposure, while gradually building up an independent Museum of Transport. In 2002 the Museum of Aviation in Košice was made available to public, in 2007 the Museum of Cinematography of Schuster family in Medzev, the youngest ejected exposure of STM, was opened.
