Located in the historic Rákoczi Palace in the centre of Prešov, Prešov Regional Museum originated in 1945 as a Municipal Museum, later becoming a Regional Museum and from 1961 the Museum of the Slovak Council Republic.
In addition to exhibitions of natural history, archaeology, history and ethnography, the museum incorporates: an Art History exhibition showing the development of handicrafts, fine art and ways of living from the mid 18th to the early 20th centuries; a Guns exhibition containing guns of different historic eras from the 16th to the early 20th centuries; and a Man and Fire exhibition, a unique collection which presents the history of fire-fighting in Slovakia.
