Upper Nitra Museum in Prievidza
Opened in 1985, originally as a branch of the Slovak National Museum in Bojnice, Upper Nitra Museum contains documents and artefacts on the history, archaeology, natural history, ethnography and art and crafts of the Upper Nitra region.
The museum’s extensive collection is of European importance and is displayed through exhibitions on palaeolithic stone industry, silver grave decorations, a Romanesque sword of the 11th century, a collection of gold coins, guild distinctions, traditional clothing, paintings on glass and valuable jewellery from the region. There is also a collection of invertebrates and unique palaeontological findings of flora and fauna. However, as the museum lacks proper exhibition rooms, exhibitions are often organised outside the museum.
