Museum of the Spiš Region in Spišská Nová Ves
Established in 1951, the Museum of the Spiš Region, Spišská Nová Ves is located in the former Spišská Nová Ves Town Hall, one of the most valuable historical buildings in the town whose foundations are believed to date from the 15th century. In 1774 it became the Provincial House, seat of the newly-constituted province of the 16 Spiš Towns. Today the building is noteworthy for its façade, decorated by six Rococo stucco cartouches, which dates from the 18th century.
The museum has gradually built up extensive natural history, history, art history, music and ethnographic collections. The exhibition ‘Nature and History of the Spiš Region’ presents the geography, geology, palaeontology, botany and zoology of the Slovenský raj National Park, Spišskogemerské rudohorie Ore Mountains, Hornádska kotlina Valley and Levočské vrchy Mountains. It also presents the history of the region through exhibits on archaeology, ethnography, mining activities and crafts.
