Founded in 1912 by the Liptov Museum Society, the Liptov Museum was taken over in 1921 by Ružomberok Municipality. Since 1937 it has been housed in a building constructed by the municipality to a design by V Donner. In 1974 the museum was affiliated with the Ethnography Museum at Liptovský Hrádok. Since its inception the museum has developed the character of a homeland museum with a wide range of collections which focus on the Liptov region.

The Natural History Exhibition is thematically divided into botanical, zoological and geological section. The Exhibition of Plantlife and Wildlife is designed to show habitats from the lowest to the highest elevations. The Exhibition of Archaeology offers a review of the settling of Liptov from Neolithic times up to the first centuries of our epoch. The Exhibition of Feudalism examines Liptov's settlement from the 13th century and the economic, social and cultural life of its inhabitants during the feudal period, leading up to the events of the revolutionary period, 1848-1849. The Guilds and Crafts in Liptov Exhibition documents the economic and social life of the guild organisations that were once concentrated in Liptov's towns and villages. The Ethnographic Exhibition shows the occupations and lifestyles of the inhabitants of Liptov village, and the development of folk costumes. The Exhibition of Sacral Art shows a selection of sacral sculptures from Liptov region and artefacts from the Gothic churches in Ludrová and Liptovská Mara villages. The History of Paper Making in Slovakia Exhibitions presents the paper-making process from the first paper mill up to present-day technology. And the Life and Work of Andrej Hlinka Exhibition presents the life and work of Slovak politician and priest Andrej Hlinka (1864-1938), leader of the Slovak People's Party and one of the most important Slovak public activists prior to World War II.
