Museum of History SNM, Bratislava
Situated in Bratislava Castle on Castle Hill, the Museum of History SNM aims to acquire, preserve, scientifically and professionally process, use and make available collections documenting the development of society in Slovakia from the Middle Ages until the present. In this context of the museum’s specialisation it has a nationwide scope. It also builds up, administers and processes a numismatic collection from the oldest times until the present, as well as collections documenting the history and ethno-cultural development of Slovaks living abroad and the culture of citizens of Croatian nationality in the Slovak Republic.
The Museum of History SNM administers almost 250,000 objects from the field of national history, historical furniture, crafts, sculpture, painting, numismatics, ethnography, warfare, economy, the history of Slovaks living abroad, Croatian culture in Slovakia and cultures outside Europe; part of this collection is exhibited in its premises at the castle.
The current focal task of the museum’s scientific research is the preparation of permanent historical expositions. The research is geared to supplementing collections and knowledge on key events and personalities in Slovak history.
Special exhibitions currently include an exhibition of the fine arts collection of the Slovak National Museum; an exhibition of Historical furniture and furnishings; the Silver Treasure exhibition of sacred and profane artefacts from the 17th to the 20th centuries; and the exhibition Treasures of the Far Past of Slovakia.
