Slovak National Museum in Martin, Martin Benka Museum
Martin Benka Museum is situated in Martin Benka House, which was built in the late 1950s for the needs of national artist Martin Benka (1888-1971), one of the most significant personalities of the founding generation of Slovak creative modern art of the first half of the 20th century; the artist took up residence here in 1959. In 1960, on the basis of a deed of gift, he handed over a share of his work to the state (5,200 works of varying format and creative technique) and partially opened his studio and a small picture gallery. The house was opened to the public as a museum following his death in September 1972. The authentically-conserved interior of the museum, respecting the last will of Martin Benka, brings to the public the work of this versatile artist, who focused primarily on painting and illustration.
