Established in 1964 and named after the SNM’s founding father Andrej Kmeť, the Andrej Kmeť Museum is housed in the First Slovak National Museum Building which was built from a public collection of the Slovak nation in 1906-1907 and has been registered as a National Cultural Monument.

Functioning as a regional museum for Turec, its 175,000 exhibits represent the living and non-living nature of the Turčianska vale and adjacent mountain ranges, with a focus on the flora, fauna, geology and ethnography of Turec. Special collections include zoological exhibits and a herbarium collected by Andrej Kmeť, the Ivan Zbiňovský collection of exotic butterflies, and paintings from a gallery of the Révayovsky family.
