Prešov Salt Works
The salt wells from which the strategic raw material – salt - was already being harvested in the Middle Ages through solar evaporation are located in the south eastern part of Prešov. Although in the second half of the 16th century rock salt also began to be mined here, the original technology of boiling brine was not abandoned. Special structures were gradually built between the 17th and 19th centuries for salt solution (brine) mining, containing, transporting, boiling and storing. Of these the most dominant, owing to its huge Baroque mansard roof, was the storage building, with its Classicist clock tower. A characteristic accessory of the grounds is the wooden knocker with the bulb roof, the little mine church of St John the Baptist, and the chapel of St Rochus. This unique complex is part of the Slovak Technical Museum in Košice.
