Comenius University in Bratislava - Department of Library and Information Science

The Department of Library and Information Science at Comenius University in Bratislava is the only Department dealing with library and information sciences in Slovakia that offers Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degree study programmes. The Department offers the possibility of pursuing Bachelors degree studies in Information Studies, Library Culture and History and Literary Communication and Libraries, plus Masters degree programmes in Information Studies and Doctorate degree programmes in Library and Information Science.

University programmes in library science were launched at Comenius University's Department of Slovak Language in 1951. A year later the Department of Library Science and Journalism was established. A separate Department of Library Science was opened in 1961 and its first head was senior lecturer Štefan Pasiar. After changing its official title several times the Department adopted its current name in 1999.
