Drama Ensemble of the Slovak National Theatre
Theatre performance in the Slovak language in Slovakia started in 1831 and played a significant role in the process of national revival. However, the professionalisation of Slovak dramatic art began only after the establishment of the Slovak National Theatre, and then not immediately. The first artistic team members of the Slovak National Theatre were the members of Eastern-Czech Theatre.
The Drama Ensemble of the Slovak National Theatre was founded in 1920, along with two other ensembles of the Slovak National Theatre. In March 1920 the Drama Ensemble performed its first premiere of a play called Mariša (Mary) by Alois and Vilém Mrštík. The first performance in the Slovak language took place in May of the same year with the introduction of two one-act plays Hriech (Sin) and V službe (On Duty) by Joseph Gregor Tajovský.
Prior to 2007 the Drama Ensemble of the Slovak National Theatre performed mainly at the Small Stage on Dostojevského and on the P O Hviezdoslav Theatre in the centre of Bratislava. The current seat of the Drama Ensemble is in the New Slovak National Theatre Building at Pribinova street in Bratislava.
