The Jozef Kroner Awards have been bestowed annually since 2001 by the Jozef Kroner Foundation in conjunction with the National Centre of Culture and the Kysuce Culture Foundation. Since 2006 they have also been presented in co-operation with Enel Slovenské Elektrárne. The awards are presented in two categories: for lasting contribution to the world of theatre (lifelong work) and for the most remarkable achievement in the area of theatre, film, television, radio or the art of dubbing. The laureates of the past award years include Ladislav Chudík, Andrej Mojžiš, Jozef Dóczy, Milan Sládek, Karol L Zachar, Elo Romančík, Leopold Haverl, Emília Vášáryová, Emil Horváth, Marián Geišberg, Eva Krížiková, Milan Kiš, Ivan Vojtek Sr and Vladimír Rohoň. In 2007 the following Jozef Kroner Awards were given: for lifelong work to Mária Kráľovičová, for an outstanding actor’s performance to Eugen Libezňuk from Alexander Duchnovič Theatre Prešov for his character of Chlestakov in The Auditor, and for lifelong contribution to acting and directing work in non-professional theatre to Vlado Benko, director and head of the amateur theatre Commedia Poprad. The 2008 Jozef Kroner Awards were conferred- for the lifelong work on Kveta Stražanová who is a member of the drama company of the Jonáš Záborský Theatre in Prešov; and for the most remarkable achievement in the last theatre season on Dušan Jamrich who is a member of the drama company of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava. The Jozef Kroner in Memoriam Awards have been conferred for the first time on František Zvarík and Michal Dočolomanský; and for the lifelong contribution in the dramatic creation in a laic theatre on Ján Rampák. In the year 2009 the Award was conferred on Štefan Orság, an actor of the 'A' Theatre in Prievidza for lifelong contribution in the dramatic creation in a laic theatre.

In 2001-2005 awards were presented in Bratislava, but since 2006 they have been presented in the J G Tajovský Theatre in Zvolen. From 2004 the Jozef Kroner Foundation extended the scope of the Jozef Kroner Awards by including amateur actors. Laureates of the award in this category to date include Štefánia Slobodová from Zeleneč (2004), Klára Roštárová from Ján Chalupka Theatre Company in Brezno (2005), and Ladislav Vagaday from Ján Chalupka Theatre Company in Brezno (2006). Awards in this category are presented on the occasion of Scenic Harvest in Martin.
