The Institute of Historical Studies SAS was founded in 1943 as an Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Arts. It was incorporated into the Slovak Academy of Sciences in 1953 and in 1982 it was renamed into the Institute of Historical Sciences. It was given its current name in 1990. IThe 1999 Foundation Deed states: 'The Historical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences was established as a budgetary organisation of the Slovak Academy of Sciences for an indefinite period of time.”'
