Monuments Board - logoThe Monuments Board of the Slovak Republic: Prešov Regional Centre directs the activities of citizens in saving, renovating, restoring and correctly using 2,657 immovable and 3,669 movable cultural monuments and conservation areas in 13 districts of the Prešov Region. It adopts measures to eliminate shortcomings in the protection of monuments and provides professional and methodological assistance to 642 municipalities and 23 towns in registering their historical monuments. It also elaborates materials for territorial planning documentation of the state administration authorities and if necessary it provides for the temporary storage of movable cultural monuments. It participates in research projects targeted on the cultural heritage of the Region of Prešov, which has the most monuments in Slovakia, including four sites entered in the UNESCO List of Cultural and Natural Heritage: Levoča, Spiš Castle and its Associated Cultural Monuments UNESCO World Heritage Site, Banská Štiavnica Historic Town and Surrounding Technical Monuments UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wooden Churches of the Slovak Part of the Carpathian Mountain Area UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Carpathian Virgin Beech Forests. Editorial, promotional and educational activities constitute a significant part of its work.
