Monuments Board of the Slovak Republic, Banská Štiavnica Office

The Banská Štiavnica branch office of the Banská Bystrica Regional Centre of the Monuments Board of the Slovak Republic carries out the state supervision of the protection of the monuments on the territory of the district of Banská Štiavnica and part of the district of Žarnovica. The town of Banská Štiavnica is its seat.

The main activity of the office is to direct the activities of citizens in saving, renovating, restoring and correctly using 264 immovable and 314 movable cultural monuments and conservation areas in the district of Banská Štiavnica and part of the district of Žarnovica. This task is even more important since the site of Banská Štiavnica and the mining works in its surroundings are entered in the UNESCO List of Cultural and Natural Heritage. The branch office adopts measures to eliminate shortcomings in the protection of monuments and provides professional and methodological assistance to 14 municipalities and the town of Banská Štiavnica in registering their historical monuments. It also elaborates materials for territorial planning documentation of the state administration authorities and if necessary it provides for the temporary storage of movable cultural monuments. It participates in research projects targeted on the cultural heritage of this attractive region of Slovakia. Editorial, promotional and educational activities constitute a significant part of its work.
