Monuments Board of the Slovak Republic, Levoča Office
The Levoča branch office of the Prešov Regional Centre of the Monuments Board of the Slovak Republic is a field department which carries out the state supervision of the protection of monuments on the territory of the districts of Levoča and partially for the districts of Poprad and Kežmarok. The town of Levoča is its seat.
It directs the activities of the citizens in saving, renovating, restoring and correctly using 549 immovable and 656 movable cultural monuments and conservation areas in the district of Levoča. It also ensures the protection of archaeological findings and archaeological sites in the districts of Poprad and Kežmarok. It adopts measures to eliminate shortcomings in the protection of monuments and provides professional and methodological assistance to 31 municipalities and two towns (Levoča, Spišské Podhradie) in registering their historical monuments. It also elaborates materials for territorial planning documentation of the state administration authorities and if necessary it provides for the temporary storage of movable cultural monuments. It participates in research projects targeted on the cultural heritage of the district of Levoča, which is noteworthy for its exceptional construction and fine art monuments of pan-European significance. They include Spiš Castle and the monuments of its surroundings (Spišská Kapitula, Church of the Holy Spirit in Žehra) and of course the work of Master Pavol of Levoča, the sites and monuments entered in the UNESCO List of Cultural and Natural Heritage. Editorial, promotional and educational activities constitute a significant part of its work.
