Šariš Gallery, Prešov
The Šariš Gallery was set up in 1956 as a regional gallery in Prešov. One of the earliest regional galleries in Slovakia, it began its exhibition activity in 1957 and relocated to its present home – two restored burgher houses – in 1981. The gallery acquired its present name in 1991.
The Šariš Gallery has its own collection which has been built up through research and acquisition, mainly by purchase. It focuses primarily on north eastern Slovakia, but also looks for, acquires and researches works by artists from eastern Slovakia, prominent personalities of modern Slovak fine art and other artists connected with the region.
Of particular note are its Iconography Exhibition, which introduces a selection of the most exquisite icons from the gallery´s collections, and the exhibition Prešov Painter Ján Rombauer, which presents a selection of works by the distinguished mid-19th century portrait painter Ján Rombauer (1782-1849), who spent a part of his life at Prešov and is also buried here.
