Established in 1965 on the foundations of the earlier Bratislava Music Spring festival, Bratislava Music Festival is the most significant and prestigious international festival of classical music in Slovakia. Since 1973 it has been the only Slovak member of the European Festivals Association (EFA), based in Brussels. The Slovak Philharmonic is the main organiser of the festival, at the authorisation of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, and the Honorary President is world-famous soprano Edita Gruberova. The festival is a presentation of major Slovak and foreign musical bodies and soloists, as well as the Slovak music works. Over the two weeks of the festival around 25 symphonic and chamber concerts is held at which Slovak and international music composers' works are presented, some premiered. The opera or ballet ensemble of the Slovak National Theatre stage a premiere within the festival.
The Festival includes the New Talent – SPP Foundation Award competition (known prior to 2003 as the International Forum of Young Performers), which is organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) based in Geneva, under the auspices of UNESCO and the International Music Council (IMC), in co-operation with Slovak Radio and the Slovak Philharmonic.
