Stibology

(An unusual assessment of the landscape and its trails)

Ing. Radan Květ, CSc.

Stibology, a discipline describing trails of the past, searches for prehistoric trails of our ancestors. In broken terrains, there are almost no changes in their routes, unlike in flat lands where the differences may encompass dozens or hundreds of metres).

The majority of Czech towns arose nearby such historic trails, so the network of main trails may help analyse prehistoric trails. It is interesting to compare the current motorway construction with old distance and regional trails.

Stibology may assess the current route of the motorway and its relationship to its surrounding in the light of old trails and thus help identify possible archaeological sites.
