Ostrava Operation

At the end of the World War II, the Ostrava region played a key role in the liberation of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia due to the fact that one third of the Reich industry was situated in this area. The battle for Ostrava, described as the “Ostrava operation”, began on 1 March 1945 and was finished on 30 April 1945 when Ostrava was liberated. It took 57 days and was one of the largest battles fought on the territory of the current Czech Republic.
