Anthropology

Anthropological analyses of human skeletal material from cremation graves

Mgr. Petra Urbanová

Anthropological analyses of skeletal remains from cremation graves require an approach different from standard analyses of intact skeletons. The cremation process modifies bones and bone tissue. The colour of bones changes and the organic component of bone tissue is reduced. Bones become harder and more fragile. Changes in chemical composition result in changes in shape and size. Bones are deformed and become smalle.

OBJECTIVES

An analysis of burnt bones can provide only limited information. Firstly, it is important to determine the biological origin of the material (human or subhuman). Secondly, if it is of human origin, the objective is to determine the basic population features (sex, age, and height) and consider the environment and health conditions.
