Diatomology

The strategy of all survey and analytical works on D47 is divided into two parts: a survey and site investigation. The survey aims at capturing original conditions of the current landscape and determine the impact of human activities on particular sites. One of the objectives is to trace direct human activities from sediments which are to be destroyed by construction works. The survey adopts four techniques: historical and geographical analysis of the region, palynology (pollen analysis), diamotology (analysis of streams and marshes) and radiocarbon dating of sediments. Based on soil samples, development schemes of vegetation and landscape character are designed.

The objective is to process the archaeobotanical material of individual sites under investigation, which results in a description of the paleoecology of settlements and cemeteries.
