The competition further develops the tradition started in 1965, which, since its establishment, has tried to improve design level and quality of polygraphic production of books. The main organiser of the competition is BIBIANA, International House of Art for Children. Co-organisers include the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Slovak Republic, Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, the Slovak National Library (SNK) and the Union of Polygraphy in Slovakia.

The goal of the competition is to support and award improvements in the field of design level and quality of polygraphic production of books.

Books enrolled in the competition are processed and evaluated in seven groups: scientific and professional literature; bell letters; literature for children and youth; textbooks; books on fine arts and picture publications; bibliophilistic publications and study assignments of students of fine art and polygraphic schools.

The enrolled books are evaluated by 20-member professional committee according to their artistic and polygraphic qualities as well as according to the harmony of all components of the book as a whole. So each year an awarded collection of maximum 20 books arise that fulfil demanding artistic and technical criteria and these books are declared The Most Beautiful Books of Slovakia.

Authors, publishers and printing offices are given eight prizes by the organisers.
