Maximilián Hell Regional Observatory and Planetarium, Observatory in Banská Bystrica
Banská Bystrica Observatory is part of Maximilián Hell Observatory and Planetarium in Žiar nad Hronom. It is a cultural and educational organisation that seeks to contribute to the dissemination of scientific knowledge from the field of astronomy among the general public, especially among children and students. Activities of the Observatory in Banská Bystrica include organising events for the public (public observations, excursions in Vartovka) and for schoolchildren (competitions, lectures, discussions, astronomical days and evenings on astronomical topics). It seeks to provide visitors not only with the latest knowledge from astronomy and related scientific disciplines, but also with an opportunity to relax in a placid suburban area in the middle of nature. Vartovka thus can become the purpose of a short weekend trip. It provides lectures for primary and secondary schools which serve to complement the astronomy curriculum. Lectures can also be held directly at schools. The preferred months for lectures are winter months (November to February). Video films or visual presentations via data projector may supplement the lectures. It is necessary to arrange the lectures with professional staff by telephone.
