Leamouth Bridge

A new footbridge will link the redeveloped Leamouth peninsula to Canning Town station.

The Leamouth Peninsula is being redeveloped and although is is very close to the good transport connections at Canning Town station, the pedestrian route to the station currently involves crossing via the Lower Lea Crossing to the west, walking up Leamouth Road and then along East India Dock Road.

The new £3m bridge - whose design was chosen by a competition - will tilt to open to allow river traffic to pass between the Lea and the Thames.

It will cross the river just before its second bend, with the northern access being either via a subway under the Lower Lea Crossing, linking to a footpath to Canning Town station through a redevelopment site (the Limmo site) on the other side of the creek, and to the Lower Lea Crossing itself, where new bus stops are proposed.

Although no bus routes currently serve the Lower Lea Crossing, TfL would extend an existing route such as the 277 (which currently terminates at Tower Hamlets Town Hall near East India) if new development on the peninsula warrants this.

Planning permission was granted in July 2005 with bridge completion estimated in spring 2007.

The Leamouth foot and cycle bridge across the River Lea in east London has been granted planning permission.
