Heathrow Personal Rapid Transit
Heathrow operators BAA want to introduce a personal rapid transit system to link car parks to terminals.
Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) is the name being given to the ULTra public transport system which has been developed from research by Bristol University.
The system provides small automated vehicles which carry up to four passengers and travel along guideways. The vehicles can be summoned by passengers arriving at a stop and the passengers can choose their destination stop, being taken there non-stop.
BAA have invested ã7.5m in ATS, the university spin-off company which has developed ULTra, in return for a 25% stake.
Plans for Heathrow are unclear but BAA want to provide a better connection from the various car parks to the five terminals.
