Eastfields Station

Various bodies wish to see a new station built between Streatham and Mitcham Junction, to cover a "hole" served by no railway stations.

Eastfields station would be on the Streatham/Balham to Mitcham Junction line served by South Central & Thameslink.

This large residential area is devoid of rail transport, the nearest station being at Mitcham Junction, some distance away, and therefore transport into London is by bus along quite congested roads to Tooting Broadway and then the similarly congested Northern Line.

The location is also much closer to Mitcham town centre than Mitcham Junction station, or even Mitcham tramstop.

Trains pass this location at low speed, since there is a level crossing, so timetabling would not be too difficult.

A feasibility study in 2000 by Merton Council, Railtrack and Thameslink showed Eastfields station to be economically viable, attracting 10,000 passengers per week.

Grove Road, on the eastern side of the station, would have a drop-off point added to it.

The SRA did specify Eastfields station as part of a package of infrastructure improvements for a 20-year South Central franchise - but the current franchise has been negotiated on a 7-year basis and focused more on the power upgrades and new trains rather any locally specific projects.

The more recent (September 2004) Brighton Line Route Utilisation Strategy [PDF] said that there were safety implications with a new station, and third party funding would be needed to build the station. Merton Council plan to obtain the funding through Section 106 agreements with developers involved in a proposed scheme to regenerate Mitcham town centre (see news article).

A proposed Tramlink extension would also serve Mitcham town centre.
