The Future

The evolving importance of the North West Region as an entity has been reinforced by ongoing governmental interventions, both North & South, through their respective commitments to support spatial, infrastructural and economic development, revolving around a Cross-Border, cross-jurisdictional and inter-related linked gateway, focussing on the hub of Derry - Letterkenny.

Funds have been made available by Government to support this in a tangible sense e.g. Gateway Innovation Fund in the Irish NDP 2007-2013. In addition to core commitments within the Irish NDP to support, in a financial sense, the capital costs associated with putting in place world-class infrastructure to support the development of the North West Region (e.g. City of Derry Airport, A5/N3 upgrading etc). As the Legislative Assembly in Northern Ireland develops its remit, it is expected that similar investment will be made from that source to also support the development of the wider North West.

The NW Economic Partnership project aims to facilitate the development of a framework within which the various organisations and private stakeholders can work collaboratively, to assist in the development of entrepreneurship and enterprise activity in the wider North West Region and is part-funded by the European Union's Interreg IIIA Programme for Ireland/Northern Ireland. The project has four programmes:

• Entrepreneurship promotion
• Business Growth
• Diaspora
• Regional Capability

The regional capability element of the NWEP project aims to facilitate the development of a framework within which the various organisations and private sector stakeholders can work collaboratively, to assist in the development of entrepreneurship and enterprise actively in the wider North West Region (effectively the "natural" economic hinterland of the North West region of the island). The approach for the regional capability element will complement and be additional to the existing roles of organisations working within the economic and enterprise development sector in the North West.
