Following the death of Karol Kuzmány, Vice-Chairman of Matica Slovenská in August 1866, his funeral march turned into a political demonstration of the oppressed nation. The Slovak cultural community and the citizens of Martin escorted all other figures of national significance to the place of their eternal rest in the same spirit. The set of graves of many outstanding public figures has thus become an enduring symbol of the Slovak national consciousness. The National Cemetary in Martin is the place of piety for the national and cultural life of the Slovaks.
