The Johann Nepomuk Hummel International Piano Contest bears the name of the pianist and composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel (b 14 November 1778 Bratislava – d 17 October 1837 Weimar), a native of Bratislava, in whose work blend the elements of late Classicism and early Romanticism. It has taken place in Bratislava since 2003 and is the member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions. The Slovak Philharmonic is the organiser, and the Contest’s President is Professor Marián Lapšanský, General Director of the Slovak Philharmonic. The mission of the Contest is to facilitate active cultivation of the legacy of a great composer and piano virtuoso while being instrumental in the start-up of the concert careers of remarkable young pianists. The contest is run in three rounds. In 2008 three main prizes were announced (with a financial prize), the holder of the 1st prize was also given a financial grant plus the possibility of giving three concerts in the Slovak Republic. Holders of the main prizes also received the title of laureates of the Contest. The jury is international, composed of distinguished domestic and foreign artists and pedagogues with majority representation of foreign jurors. The seventh year of the contest will be held on 14 – 20 November 2011.
