The Council for Broadcasting and Retransmission is an independent body, which performs state regulation in the field of radio and television broadcasting.
The aim of the Council is to take care of viewers’ interests in exercising the right to information, the freedom of expression and the right of access to cultural values and education and administers state regulation in the area of broadcasting and retransmission. The Council takes care of preserving the plurality of information in news programmes of broadcasters, who broadcast on the basis of law or a licence and oversees the compliance with law regulating broadcasting and retransmission. The activity of the Council which follows from its function and competence is performed by the Council members; tasks which are related to the activity of the Council are performed by employees of the Office of the Council for Broadcasting and Retransmission.
The Council supervises the decisions on licences for broadcasting, oversees the broadcasting and compliance with duties according to relevant law regulations, it imposes sanctions on broadcasters and retransmission runners as well as it considers law violation complaints.
The Council has got nine members who are elected by the Slovak National Council. Proposals for the Council members can be submitted to the Committee of the National Council by MPs, professional institutions and civic associations which are involved in the field of audio vision, mass media, culture, science, education, sport, registered churches and religious groups as well as groups and civic associations of disabled citizens through the Coordination Committee for Questions of Disabled People in the Slovak Republic. The Council elects the Chairman and the Vice-Chairman from its members.
