The Slovak Film and Television Academy (SFTA) was established as a foundation in August 1996. It is a publicly beneficial, voluntary, interest organisation which associates distinguished figures of Slovak audiovisual culture. Its mission is to contribute to the creation of a systemic environment for the stabilisation of the Slovak audiovisual scene, supporting the creation of legislative, production and organisational systems for the Slovak audiovisual environment, promoting cultural activities linked to film and functioning as an umbrella institution for the presentation of Slovak audiovisual culture, domestically and internationally.
SFTA is partner to similar organisations and institutions abroad, including the European Film Academy and the American Film Academy. It initiates and holds annual exhibitions of Slovak feature, documentary and animated film productions and is the founder and guarantor of the Sun in a Net National Film Awards. In co-operation with partner organisations abroad it nominates Slovak films for awards such as the European Film Awards and American Film Academy (Oscar) Awards for best non-English spoken film. The Academy pays special attention to the succeeding generation of filmmakers, creating conditions for its professional recognition and for the support and presentation of their works abroad. The current SFTA President is Emília Vášáryová. In 2007 the Slovak Film and Television Academy became member of FAN – the association of national film academies – and began to co-operate more closely with the European Film Academy (EFA).
