Trenčín is situated on the Váh River in the Trenčín Basin of north west Slovakia, surrounded by the Strážov, Považský Inovec and White Carpathian mountains, Its medieval castle stands on a rock above the city. The city lies at an altitude of 362 metres (1,188 ft) above sea level.
Trenčín covers an area of 81.996 square kilometres and has a total population of 56,760 (2006).
