Tram Projects

The Corporation of London has proposed a tram scheme from the southwest via the City to Islington and Hackney. This scheme is being proposed to complement the existing Cross River Transit which runs from the southeast and south through western central London.

TfL are investigating proposals for a tram in the boroughs of Haringey and Enfield. This possible tram scheme was mentioned at the Mayor's Question Time on 24 June 2004.
A fairly short spur would take Tramlink from Harrington Road and Birkbeck via Anerley to Crystal Palace station. This is the most likely Tramlink extension proposal to come to fruition. The Tramlink route to Beckenham Junction took over one track of the rail route from Birkbeck to Beckenham Junction, which sees lightly-used trains to Victoria every half hour.
A new tram stop for the Centrale retail development in Croydon is now open. The developers of a new shopping centre (Centrale) in Croydon paid for a new tram stop to serve their development, under Section 106 obligations.
A north-south route from Purley via Croydon to Streatham is being considered for Tramlink. The route would probably run mainly along the A23 London Road, from Purley Cross to Waddon, onto the central loop and out from West Croydon to Thornton Heath Pond, then up the road to Norbury and Streatham.
Two new routes on the Croydon tram network are proposed; Sutton to Tooting via Mitcham and Sutton to Wimbledon via the current rail route. TfL has commissioned a report from the consultancy group FaberMaunsell into the feasibility of the following tram routes:
The South London Partnership lobbied for additional tram routes in South London including routes from Kingston to Sutton and the M25. A number of extensions to the successful Croydon Tramlink system are already under consideration by TfL - these run to Sutton, Tooting, Purley, Streatham & Crystal Palace. The South London Partnership is lobbying for these extensions to take place.
