Stratford DLR station upgrade

The existing single-platform Stratford DLR station is being rebuilt with two platforms.

The old Stratford DLR station was right in the middle of the station with easy interchange to Great Eastern and LU Central Line services.

However, the single platform posed problems for both overcrowding and service frequency on the DLR network.

Under an £18m plan, two platforms are being constructed south of the Central Line platforms. Access is either direct from the concourse or via a footbridge to the Central Line platforms (3 and 5). There is also provision for a new entrance in future from Gibbins Road.

Capacity will be increased with two platforms, enabling an enhanced frequency of service to Stratford station. In the future, the whole line between Bow Church and Stratford (which currently only has a passing loop at Pudding Mill Lane) could be doubled - this work could be accomplished as part of Crossrail which would surface here on its way between Whitechapel and Stratford.

A planning application was submitted in June 2004 with approval given on 15 September; a contractor was appointed in June 2005 with construction starting in August 2005. The first platform is opened on 18 June 2007 (with the old platform decommissioned) and the second new platform will open in September 2007.

One of the two new platforms being built for DLR at Stratford has now opened.

Four contractors have been shortlisted by TfL for the tendering competition to build the new DLR station at Stratford, which will replace the current bay platform. Hochtief (UK) Ltd., Gleeson MCL Ltd., Mowlem and Taylor Woodrow have been shortlisted, and the winner will be chosen in March.
