Emergencies and Disasters

In case of fire or injury, call the Fire Department for a fire engine or ambulance. In case of burglary or other crimes or accidents, call the police.

Calling from a Public Phone :

  • When calling from a public phone, neither change nor a telephone card is necessary.
  • Lift the receiver, press the red button and dial 110 for the police or 119 for the fire department or an ambulance.
  • When they answer, give the following information in Japanese :
     1. What's happened
     2. Your name
     3. Your location
     4. A nearby landmark
     5. Your telephone number (or the number of the public phone)

 

DAIL 119 : EXAMPLE CONVERSATION TO CALL AN AMBULANCE
You : 「KynKyu desu !」(It's an emergency! )
Fire Depariment : 「Donoyouna guaidesuka ?」(What's happened? )
You : 「Keganin ga imasu」(There's been an injury.)
   「Koutsujiko desu 」(Car accident)
   「Ishikifumei desu」(Someone is unconscious.)
Fire Depariment : 「Basho wa doko desuka」(Where are you?)
You : 「   desu」(give location and nearby landmark).

DAIL 119 : EXAMPLE CONVERSATION FOR A FIRE
You : 「Kaji desu !」(Fire! )
Fire Depariment : 「Nani ga moete imasuka?」(What's burnning?)
You : 「     desu」(explain what's burnning).
Fire Depariment : 「Basho wa doko desuka」(Where are you?)
You : 「     desu」(give location and nearby landmark).

 

DAIL 110 : EXAMPLE CONVERSATION TO CALL POLICE (Accident)
You : 「Jiko desu!」(There' been an accident!)
Police :「Dou shimashitaka? 」(What's happened? )
You : 「Jidousha ni butsukari mashita 」(There was a car crash.)
Police :「Basho wa doko desuka」(Where are you?)
You : 「   desu」(give location and nearby landmark).

You : 「Hittakuri ni ai mashita!」(There's been a burglary!)
Police :「Dou shimashitaka? 」(What's happened? )

You : 「   desu」(give location and nearby landmark).
