Etrurian Walls
Fiesole is a town with foundations stretching back to the 9th Century B.C. Etruscan settlement of "Viesul". At the time, it occupied a strategic position within the Etruscan Confederacy. Etrurian Viesul was conquered by Rome in 283 B.C., becoming the Roman colony of "Faesulae".
In the Roman World, the site gained an astute reputation for its' learned Priestly Class of Etruscan Augurs, and men from Rome were sent to Faesulae to study the arts of Divination under their Etruscan predecessors.
Sulla later colonized the town with Veterans. Apart from the remains of the Etruscan walls, and bath complexes also dating from the Roman Period, the illustrious ruins of modern Fiesole's Ancient Roman theatre are a must see.
