Pink or Gray phones : accept 10 and 100 yen coins

  • Green phones :accept telephone cards, 10 and 100 yen coins.
  • Many 10 yen coins can be inserted into the phone consecutively-unused money will be refunded at the end of the call. No change is given for 100 yen coins.
  • Telephone cards are very convevient-they can be purchased at stations or an convenience store, and eliminate the need for change. Telephone cards are sold in 500 and 1,000 yen denominations.

Useful Three Digit Information Numbers (all information is given in Japanese):
100 : For operator assisted domestic long distance calls, and domestic calls for which knowing the cost is necessary.
104 : Directory assistance. Available 24 hours a day. For each month, the charge is 30 yen for the first call, 60 yen for each call therafter.

106 : Collect or credit charge calls. When making such a call from a public phone, insert 10 yen or 100 yen coin or telephone card. The coin or the card willbe returned after the call has been made.
113 : Telephone repair service.
115 : The number for domestic telegram service. Not available at public phones.
116 : Application for phone installation or relocation.
117 : Time.
177 : Local weather information. By dialing the area code of a city before dialing 117 the weather forecast for that city can also be obtained.
