Buying Household Items/Putting Out the Trash

●Getting things together for every life

• Stores which carry household items include supermarkets, second hand discount shops and convenience stores.
• A suggested list of things to buy can be found on the following pages.
• While the times vary by store and area, Japanese supermarkets are usually open from about 10:00 a.m. to about 7:00 p.m. Some stores are open until 10:00 p.m. and most convenience stores are open 24 hours a day.
• Many stores are closed one day a week (the day varies from store to store). Particular attention should be paid to the fact that many stores are closed from January 1st to 3rd for the New Year's holiday.
• Advertisements for sales can be found in Japanese newspapers. Once settled in, bargain sales can be a convenient way to buy things to make life more comfortable.

●Putting out the garbage

　　Garbage days differ in each neighborhood. Your landlord or neighborhood leader should be contacted for specific days and dates for various types of garbage.

• Please put your garbage on specified days and specified places.
• Garbage days and pickup places vary by neighborhood.

《Division of burnable and non burnable garbage 》

◎Burnable waste: kitchen refuse, leather goods, clothes, litter, wood chips and food plastic containers except for paper containers and packing. Be sure to dispose rubbish using the Yamaguchi City-specified rubbish bags.

◎Non-burnable waste: metal, glass, ceramics, ashes, small electrical appliances and plastic other than plastic food trays, paper containers, packing and rubber.

◎Recyclable Waste:

• Cans (Not food cans but canned/tinned foods): Wash the inside. Don't crush them and put them into the green containers.
  
  
• Bottles (Food bottles only. Broken bottles acceptable): Wash the inside and remove the caps. Sort bottles according to the three colors, the transparent ones into the white containers, the brown ones into the brown containers and other colors into the blue containers; put them into the specified colored containers.
  
  
• PET bottles (Soft drinks, soy sauce and liquor only): Wash the inside and crush bottles. Make sure to remove caps and put them into the green containers. Make sure that bottles have the mark.
  
  
• Used paper: Tie them with only paper twines.
  • Cardboard (Only the type that has wave materials inside is acceptable): Folded cardboard should not exceed 1m in length.
  • Old newspapers: Fold papers in four(Advertising flyers are included)
  • Old magazines: Books such as weekly magazines, catalogs and textbooks are acceptable.
  • Paper containers/packing: Fold them or cut them open.
    
    
• Plastic containers: Wash inside and rinse out the bottle. Put them into only transparent or semitransparent plastic bags.

◎Batteries and fluorescent lights: Put them into the specified boxes set up at the City Hall and it's branch offices.

◎Uncollectable Refuse:

• The four domestic electrical appliances (Air-conditioners, televisions, refrigerators and washing machines): Return them to the shop at which you bought them and pay the service charge.
• Tires/tyres, motorcycles, gas cylinders, car batteries, waste-oil cans and fire extinguishers: Return them to the traders concerned or the shop at which you bought them.
• Large-sized refuse: Bring them to the city disposal ground by yourselves or ask refuse collectors or the shop you bought them from, to do so.
