History of the Ryukyus and the Romance of Awamori
"Awamori" first appeared during the golden age of the Kingdom of the Ryukyus. (These islands were a proud and independent nation during the 15th through the 19th centuries). Through the changes of history, Awamori has retained its place as the liquor most favored by Okinawans for all occasions. Even today, Awamori is Okinawa's most demanded and most consumed spirit. Awamori-Kan, where all brands of Awamori are gathered and offered, is an Awamori lover's dream come true. Dedicated to reflecting the significant historical role of aged Awamori (Kusu), Awamori-Kan opened August 18, 1996 in the Samukawa district of the ancient capital of Shuri. Literally the House of Awamori, we display and sell all the brands distilled throughout Okinawa. A wide variety of rare, hard to find and aged Awamori are available alongside an exhibition of the history and traditions of Awamori. Along with the educational experience, visitors are invited to taste Kusu Awamori at the Tasting Room. We are willing to assist on any subject relating to Awamori, so please visit us.
