In the past, two separate Jewish communities operated in Žilina. Today the Jewish religious community uses the Orthodox house of prayer, which also incorporates one of the exhibitions of the Museum of Jewish Culture SNM. Though no longer used for religious purposes, the former neological synagogue is one of the most significant examples of modern synagogue architecture in Europe. This remarkable functionalist building was built in 1929-31 according to the designs of important German architect Peter Behrens. Today it serves as a cinema and only a memorial plaque recalls its original purpose.
