| During the Ryukyu Dynasty the social classes were differentiated by theãofficial clothes people wore. The size of the patterns or the background colors of clothes were determined according to social class as well as age and sex. Big patterns were for the royal family and nobles, and small stencil-patterned fabrics were for shizoku. In particular, yellow Bingata was only allowed for the royal family and aristocrats and for ceremonies and entertainment occasions. Designers employed by the royal family drew patterns and ordered their appointed dye house to produce the pattern. A pattern once used was returned to the family and was never to be used again, and therefore the designers had to come up with new patterns all the time.
