Early Geelong
| In 1835, John Batman explored the area around Geelong. The first European settlers soon followed, with land sales in Geelong being held as early as 1839. By the time gold was discovered in Victoria Geelong was already a port and a trading centre and soon became a gateway to the goldfields.
